  • Aimed at a contemporary family audience for the BBC Sunday night broadcast slot (8.10pm)
  • Targeted at fans of the fantasy genre along with fans of the original books by Philip Pullman.
  • Diverse representations of gender and race may appeal to a younger audience.
  • Rated for 14+ by HBO due to some scenes that may be frightening to younger children.
  • The UK DVD release of His Dark Materials season 2 is rated 12 by the BBFC.


2) What audience pleasures are offered by His Dark Materials - The City of Magpies? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.


Personal Identity: audience become immersed in main characters adventurous lifestyle (lyra)

Personal Relationships: audience develop attachment to characters friend ships and want to have that in their personal lives 

Diversion (Escapism): the far fetched story line has so much difference to the audiences actual lives that they find pleasure in vicariously living through the characters lives 

 

3) Thinking of the 3 Vs audience pleasures (Visceral, Vicarious and Voyeuristic pleasures), which of these can be applied to His Dark Materials?

i think out of the 3Vs ,vicarious pleasures can be applied as the story has elements of adventure and mystery that would seem appealing to an audience 


4) How did fans react to Season 2 of His Dark Materials? What about critic reviews?

The second series of His Dark Materials has been welcomed by critics, but many have said it is weaker than the first.The launch episode of the second season, titled The City of Magpies, was watched by an average of 4.4 million viewers on Sunday evening.The Independent's Ed Cumming said: "It looks great, it's robustly made, and there are great actors everywhere, occupying well-built universes."But it doesn't inspire as much wonder as it ought to."



5) What might be some of the preferred and oppositional readings for His Dark Materials? Why did some fans love it? Why have other people criticised it? 

As it was already a book there was a prominent fan base already , so they would be excited to see their favourite book come to life . however others may have been dissapointed .

Camera blog tasks. MEDIUM CLOSE UP: This shot is used to show us the actor from their torso upwards. This makes the audience rely on the actor's facial expression to see what emotion they are portraying. CLOSE UP: This makes the audience pick up on a specific emotion by focusing closely on the actors face/facial expression. OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT:   is shows us the actors face in more detail. It helps the audience pick up on a specific This makes us focus on the setting and the actors' surroundings rather than facial expression and body language.  HIGH ANGLE: This angle is used to make the actor look weak and small. Mise- en-scene : stranger things analysis

Stranger things analysis  LIGHTING: At the opening of the trailer ,we can see that the lights are flickering and the scene is quite dim. As the lights continue to flicker the shot follows a scared scientist as he makes his way through the laboratory. From this i can see that the flickering lights add an eerie,scary and dangerous vibe to the scene because  we can obviously see that the lights aren't working which adds a sense of uncertainty . The last part of the trailer focuses on the four boys that are in their friends basement playing games. The lights are warm and soft for most of the scene,which gives the audience a feel of safety . In the another shot as the boys are going home the outside lights flicker one more time , this tells me that something dangerous is about to happen.
